Nearly 40 wildlife species excluded from Red Book of Nizhny Nocgorod region

Thirty-eight species of living organisms could be excluded from the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Since the time of its publication in 1996, it has been possible to achieve the growth and stabilization of the species listed in the book.

The data on the absence of anthropogenic threats was obtained as well.

In particular, the number of species of birds of prey has grown. For example, the number of such species as the golden eagle, the osprey and the white-tailed eagle has grown from three to six times, along with the number of rare species of waterfowl, such as the black-throated loon. This became possible owing to biological activities to install artificial nests.

The Nizhny Novgorod region has become one of the first regions of Russia that started its own Red Book. As many as 287 species of animals, 179 species of higher plants, 46 species of moss, algae and lichens, 50 species of fungi remain under special protection in the region. More than 140 species of animals and plants are in need of special control over their condition in natural environment.

"One needs to continue publishing editions of the regional Red Book. One needs to publish volumes devoted as animals, plants and mushrooms. This should be done in the coming years," Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Valery Shantsev said.
