Northwest Russia to be testing area for Kyoto agreements

The mechanisms for the implementation of Kyoto agreements will be tested inKarelia, the Leningrad, Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions (NorthwestRussia). A corresponding decision was made at a meeting of the task forceworking within the framework of the conference for collaboration in theBaltic region, which took place in Riga (Latvia), the Russian EnergyMinistry reported to RBC today. A corresponding memorandum on understandingbetween the governments of the Baltic Sea countries is expected to besigned as early as at the end of 2002.The decision to create a testing area for examining the mechanisms forKyoto agreements was made by the Energy Ministers of Denmark, Estonia,Finland, Germany, Island, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, andSweden at the Helsinki conference on collaboration in the Baltic region in1999.
