Russian Foreign Ministry satisfied with UN broadened powers in Iraq

The Russian Foreign Ministry is satisfied with the fact that after intensive diplomatic talks the Russian stand for broadening the UN participation in the postwar Iraqi settlement has gained general support, RIA Novosti learned at the ministry on Thursday.

Back on July 22, when the UN Security Council was considering the Secretary General's report on Iraq, Russia supported the assessments and recommendations contained in it and related to setting up a UN mission with broad powers in Iraq, the ministry pointed out. "Now the Russian stand has found an adequate reflection in the new draft resolution of the UN Security Council," it emphasized.

The Russian Foreign Ministry views the temporary ruling council as a step towards restoring Iraq's sovereignty. The Council is "to interact with the UN in order to ensure adoption of the country's new Constitution within the coordinated period and the holding of democratic elections," the ministry believes.
