A reform of the UN is necessary, but it should be well-considered and consistent, said director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's department of international organizations Andrei Granovsky at a press conference in RIA Novosti.
"The UN reform is long-standing, the organization needs to be adjusted to the new reality," he said. At the same time, "we cannot conduct a reform for the sake of the reform, we should use the "don't do harm" principle, so the reform should be well-considered and consistent," Granovsky emphasized.
At present "the reform is skidding as different states have different interests: some want the UN to concentrate on struggle against poverty and starvation, others are more focused on improving the UN peacekeeping functions," he explained. "We need to come to an agreement, but on the basis of clear compliance with the UN Charter and the principles of international legislation," Granovsky underlined.
