UN High Commissioner For Refugees To Visit Ingushetia's Refugee Camps

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ruud Lubbers, currently on a visit to Russia, is flying, Wednesday morning, for Ingushetia, the republic neighbouring Chechnya, to visit Chechen resettlers' camps, the Russian foreign ministry told RIA Novosti. Foreign ministry officials will be accompanying the guest on the tour. Prominent political figure in the Netherlands, Mr Lubbers took the post of UN High Commissioner for Refugees early last year replacing Sadako Ogata of Japan, who was heading the Office for 10 years. This is the incumbent commissioner's maiden visit to Russia. Mr Lubbers first expressed a desire to look into conditions forced migrants, primarily those from Chechnya, are living in in Russia when meeting with Sergei Ordzhonikidze, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, in Geneva. The desire was basically due to the Office's plan to allocate $8-10 million as aid to Chechen resettlers. Ruud Lubbers is expected to be back in Moscow Wednesday night.
