Egypt: Do not attack Iraq

Egyptian Foreign Minister warns US of Arab world’s reaction

Ahmed Mahir, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, has warned the US that both Egypt and the rest of the Arab world are against the plan to carry out military action against Iraq.

He stated that “this vision is in harmony with most of the world states’ attitudes towards Iraq”. He added that any military action would result in the devastation of the whole region, a view which is gaining support from Turkey and other Arab nations in the Gulf.

In Khartoum, the Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael declared that Sudan rejects all threats made by the USA against Iraq and said that Sudan supports Iraq to stand firm against them. He added that it was the function of the United Nations Organisation and the international community as a whole to use diplomatic means to solve the growing tension. Since “any strike would cause more sufferings to Iraq and would negatively affect regional peace and stability”.
