Russian Gas to Reach Britain Via Germany

The Russian government has approved the project of a gas pipeline via Vyborg, a Russian town on the Finnish border, across Germany and on to Great Britain, Russian Energy Minister Igor Yusufov told journalists.

The gas will be coming from Yamal, a peninsula on the arctic coast of Western Siberia, to Vyborg, then on to Germany along a 1,200 kilometre-route ending up on the British territory. On the first stage, the pipeline will operate at a capacity of 19 billion cubic meters a year, 30 billion cubic meters being the projected goal.

The Northern European pipeline will probably be using gas from the Shtokman gas-condensate field too. "We are looking into the possibility of building an infrastructure for the Northern European gas pipeline," said Yusufov.
