Chechens to Get Compensation from Federal Authorities for Lost Housing

Russia's federal government is going to make lump-sum payments to households who have lost property in Chechnya as a result of the counter-terrorism campaign. The maximum compensation has been set at 240,000 rubles (7,742 dollars, on current rates) for completely lost property and at 50,000 rubles ($1,613), for damaged property, Stanislav Ilyasov, Russian Minister for the Chechen Republic, said following today's session of the inter-agency commission for government aid to Chechnya.

According to the minister, applications for compensation will be accepted August 1 through November 1 this year while the payments will begin in September, to continue through 2004. The lists of families who have lost their homes in Chechnya will have been finalized by July 1 while the lists of claimants to other types of compensation will start to be drawn up on August 1, Ilyasov said. The federal government's allocations for the purpose will total some 20 billion rubles (with the dollar currently trading at R31), he announced.
