Border Guards of Russia And USA to Continue Jointly Guarding Biological Resources of Bering Sea

The border guards of Russia and the USA will continue to jointly guard the biological resources of the Bering Sea.

As the press service of the North-Eastern regional directorate (SVRU) of the Federal Frontier Service (FPS) of Russia said, a SVRU official delegation led by Lieutenant-General Nikolai Lisinsky returned from Alaska to Kamchatka on Friday. During the visit the Russian border guards and the representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard specified joint actions to protect the biological resources in 2003, and drew up and adopted a plan of actions to guard the aquatic bioresources in the convention region for 2004.

The Neva frontier escort ship which participated in a joint exercise with her counterparts from the 17th district of the U.S. Coast Guard is now heading for the Kamchatka coast. Mutual orienting of ships, maintenance of communication in different ranges, and joint actions to rescue people in distress at sea were polished up in the course of the exercise.

Patrol ships and aviaton of the U.S. Coast Guard participated in the exercise from the U.S. side. The planned exercise lasted for about a fortnight.

The agreement on interaction in protecting the aquatic biological resources in the convention region was concluded between SVRU of the FSP of Rthe Russian Federation and the 17th district of the U.S. Coast Guard in 1996.
