According to forecasts of the Russian Telecommunications Ministry, by the end of this year 20 percent of the Russian population will be using mobile telephones. Telecommunications Minister Leonid Reiman released this data today at a plenary meeting of the 7th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. He said that in 2002 the number of mobile subscribers in Russia had jumped 2.3 times against 2001. By the beginning of 2003, it reached 18 million people. Every month the number of Russian mobile subscribers advances by 1 million people, Reiman pointed out.
The minister also reported that the priority task for the ministry was the development of the Russian software market. The forecasted volume of software will reach $350m by the end of 2003; however, it is planned to increase it to $1bn, Reiman noted.
