Irina Malenko: American soldiers beat Portuguese military man

American soldiers assaulted a military man from Portugal, who saluted to Osama bin Laden for fun when he appeared on a TV screen of NATO’s Lajes army base situated on the Portugal Azores island the Portuguese radio station RDP said. “Several American military men brutally beat a Portuguese soldier. They were stopped only when other Portuguese soldiers came to help their countryman. It was a real battle, – RDP reported. American and Portuguese police arrived. 30 policemen stopped the fight with the use of weapon.”

Spokesmen for the Defense Ministry of the country refused to make any comments. RDP also said that the beaten Portuguese soldier was arrested for that joke of his.

The radio station stated that it was not the first incident like that in a series of verbal and physical confrontations between the troops of the two countries, deployed on the Azores. The relations between them became rather tense after September 11.
