Australia: Terrorism

The Minister for Justice, Senator Chris Ellison warned Australians today that their country is likely to become a target for a major terrorist attack within the next 2-3 months. Warning is based on the intelligence recently obtained by security agencies, but does not specify any dates or objects being targeted.

In the meantime, police in Perth arrested Mr. Jack Roche, a British-born convert to Islam recently making spectacular claims in media interviews.

Mr. Roche is accused of a conspiracy to blow up the Israeli Embassy in Canberra and the General Consulate in Sydney. He's married to an Indonesian woman, speaks fluent Indonesian and spent some time among the followers of Jama'a Islamiya in Australia. Through his lawyer, Mr. Roche denied all accusations.

Australian media reports warn also today about unchecked activities of Hizb Ut Tahrir (Party of the Revolution), a radical Islamic organization with headquarters in London promoting the non-violent overthrow of governments and the introduction of caliphate.
