Australia: The Capital Is On Fire

Over 400 houses have been destroyed and 4 people died in the worst fire storm to reach Canberra in living memory. Bush fires, usually limited to remote country areas, appeared suddenly in densely populated residential suburb of Canberra this weekend. Western suburb of Duffy has been practically destroyed by the flames and the fire damaged a number of houses in the upmarket area of Belconnen. Popular ski resorts of Thredbo and Perisher have been evacuated. Thousands of residents moved to temporary evacuation shelters and the government declared state of emergency in the Australian Capital Territory.
