Nine killed after bomb attack to the US Embassy in Lima

Only a few days ahead of the visit to Peru of US President George Bush as part of a tour around Latin America, a car bomb exploded Wednesday night near the US Embassy in the Peruvian Capital. At least, nine people were reported dead, among them two embassy security guards, as per reports from local authorities.

National Peruvian officers reacted to the unexpected attack expressing their reject to what considered as a criminal act of terrorism and putting military forces on high alert. In the meantime, Vice President Raul Diez Canseco said the Government will make every effort to find those responsible for the attack.

The car bomb exploded 100 meters away from the main entrance of the US Embassy, inside a shopping center parking adjacent to the building. In addition to the security guards killed, three police officers died and a boy who was skating at the shopping area.

President Bush is now in Monterrey, Mexico, taking part of a Summit for Development where, he confirmed to Peruvian President Hugo Toledo his decision to fly to Peru as scheduled.
