Putin And Sukarnoputri to Sign Declaration of Partnership Between Russia And Indonesia

Vladimir Putin and president Megawati Sukaroputri of Indonesia will sign a Declaration on the Basic Principles of Friendly Relations of Partnership between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Indonesia in the 21st century, sources in the Kremlin have told RIA Novosti.

For the first time in 14 years the Indonesian leader arrived in Russia on an official visit which will last till April 24.

Megawati Sukarnoputri is the daughter of the founder and first president of independent Indonesia, Dr. Sukarno. The most fruitful period of friendship and cooperation between our countries is associated with her father's name.

Interaction with Indonesia is an important direction of the Russian poliocy in the Asia-Pacific region, the Kremlin officials emphasize.

More than fifty-year-old ties of cooperation link Russia and Indonesia. Relations between our countries are characterised by a high degree of mutual understanding and proximity and coincidence of the approaches to the resolution of the main international and regional problems.

In Moscow they note that the visit of Megawati Sukarnoputri "will become a signal event from the point of view of the further development of relations of Russia and Indonesia on a mutually advantageous basis and their elevation onto a new level of partnership, which will be registered in the Declartation".

It is expected that during the consideration of the complex of bilateral relations main stress will be made on their diversification and enrichment of the forms of cooperation.

Favourable conditions for building up cooperation in the trade-economic, scientific-technical and humanitarian spheres and for establishing military-technical and other directions of interaction have now shaped up, RIA Novosti sources in the Kremlin noted.

The Russian-Indonesian joint commission on trade-economic and technical cooperation the second meeting of which was held on Bali island in Indonesia last March must play a perceptible role in this.

During Megawati Sukarnoputri's stay in Moscow it is intended to sign a number of bilateral agreements on concrete directions of cooperation.

As RIA Novosti has learnt, the struggle against international terrorism and answers to other global challenges will be an important theme at the talks with the president of Indonesia. The sides will also discuss such problems as strengthening of universal peace and international and regional security, the role of the UN, strengthening of the multilateral regimes of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the Iraq crisis, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and some others.
