Russia will cooperate with the US transitional temporary administration in Iraq on the basis of the international law, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov stated in his interview with the Qatar TV Channel, Al-jazeera.
He recalled that "in compliance with the Geneva and the Hague conventions the occupying power should be responsible for the country's life support and satisfaction of its humanitarian needs.
When giving comments on the new draft of the UN Security Council resolution on Iraq introduced by the USA, Great Britain and Spain, Fedotov noted that "at the transitional stage the country has a temporary US administration, although the resolution envisages that a temporary Iraqi administration followed by a legal government must be created as soon as possible".
When answering a question on how Russia intends to vote for the project, the Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that "Russia would determine its final standpoint concerning the project as soon as it sees the final text of the resolution." "And its final text will be ready after consultations at the UN Security Council," he explained.
"Voting against the project can hardly change something, as the legal situation does not depend on whether or not the resolution will be passed," the diplomat believes. "The current key objective is to bring the process of post-war settlement within the UN framework by means of the UN Security Council resolution," Mr. Fedotov stressed.
