Former Russian tennis star Andrei Chesnokov was wounded in a shooting in eastern Ukraine, police said on Monday.
Chesnokov was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot twice with rubber bullets early Sunday in Dnipropetrovsk, where he was taking part in a tennis tournament.
He flew back to Moscow on Monday after discharging himself from hospital, Russia's NTV television channel reported.
"I defended myself as best I could. I didn't have any weapon, no baseball bat or knife," he told NTV.
Chesnokov was shot during a quarrel with his companion and two unidentified men, as he was leaving a restaurant, Interior Ministry spokesman Volodymyr Mulko said.
Police detained one of the suspects after Chesnokov gave police the license plate number of the car in which the alleged attackers left the restaurant, Mulko said. The man detained, the car's driver, said another three people had been in his car.
Chesnokov last played on the ATP tour in 1999, and won seven singles titles, AP reported. V.A.
