President Vladimir Putin promised to support further development of the Jewish community in Russia. According to the president's press service, Putin made the statement during a meeting with Russia's chief rabbi Berl Lazar and Jewish community in Russia member Alexander Borodoy. Putin emphasized that the Jewish community leadership does a lot to strengthen the multi-confessional and multi-national character of the country. He also wished the Jewish community in Russia a happy Hanukkah.
