Reuters and the Afghan Islamic Press reported the incident, which was then picked up by the BBC and IG. According to eye-witness reports, a B-52 bomber and two helicopters were used in an attack on the village of Qalaye Niazi, south of Gardez in Paktia province.
The exact number of dead is reported to be 107 in the attack which took place at dawn on Sunday. The Shura, or local tribal council, called the US authorities to inspect the damage and a Reuters cameraman confirmed that US and Northern Alliance troops had been seen in the area, examining the craters.
