Number of children who do not go to school diminishes in Russia

The number of children, who do not attend school and other educational establishments, has been diminishing in Russia. Over the past three years their number has decreased by 14,500. This notwithstanding, according to the data of the Ministry of Education of Russia, more than 26,000 children did not go to school in 2002.

This was stated by Deputy Minister of Education of Russia Yelena Chepurnykh at the meeting of the Ministry's Board on Tuesday.

In the Ministry they hold the view that the stay of children at schools must become interesting and cognitive. For this purpose it is necessary to develop full-day schools, when children will be taught general-education subjects before lunch, and after lunch they will be able to receive an additional education. Special centres, at which children, who have missed from a half-year to two years of studies, will be able to make up for the lost time, should also be set up.

Furthermore, in Chepurnykh's opinion, neighbourhood clubs should be developed to organise children's spare time. The Deputy Minister explained that the additional education establishments now number about 9,000, with more than 8 million people studying at them. Over the past decade the number of these establishments has increased by 3,400, and the number of children studying at them - by 5 million. So, it is safe to say that in the past few years the system of additional education establishments in Russia has been developing effectively enough, Chepurnykh noted.
