95% of passengers evacuated from Moscow subway

A total of 95% passengers who were in the Moscow metro during the blackout have been evacuated, said Viktor Beltsov, a spokesman of the emergencies ministry. "95% of passengers have been evacuated. According to preliminary information there are no casualties," Beltsov said without giving the precise numbers.

Some time before that, he told journalists that about 20,000 people had been stranded in the tunnels between the Serpukhovskaya and Bulvar Dmitriya Donskogo metro stations.

Beltsov said that 1,000 buses had been assigned to normalize traffic in the southwest, southeast and south districts of Moscow. The blackout did not affect the water supply system, which "worked without fail," Beltsov said.

Experts of the Zashchita (Protection) national center of disaster medicine are ready to help the stranded metro passengers. "We are ready to provide assistance at the exit from the metro," said Valery Shabanov, chief physician of the center's hospital. But nobody has requested their help so far.
