Another Kamchatkan volcano awakens

The volcano Bezymyanny has woken up after another Kamchatkan volcano, Klyuchevsky, which began erupting the other day.

A few hours ago, the volcano began spitting out ash and gas, reported Alexei Ozerov, a senior researcher with the Laboratory of Active Volcanism. The outbursts, which followed a six-month period of dormancy, are 250 to 500 meters high.

Ozerov said the tremors measured five times the background norm and were getting stronger. The top of the volcano is covered with ash.

Volcanologists are now unable to keep an eye on the Klyuchevsky because of bad weather conditions.

Both volcanoes pose no threat to the populated areas of Kamchatka. The outbursts, however, may impede air traffic and endanger tourists, hunters and fishers in the area, said Ozerov.
