Representatives of the Russian and US presidential committees on interned and missing prisoners-of-war have departed for the island of Shumshu /the Kuril islands/ to find the dive-bomber, which made there an unsuccessful crash landing in 1945.
The US army experts will participate in the expedition that began its work in Kamchatka on June 20th, the Kamchatka regional administration informed RIA Novosti. The Russian part of the expedition consisting of eight people is headed by Major General Konstantin Golumbovsky.
The committee representatives are conducting research on the Shumshu island and near the Malaya Khodutka hill where two US planes were brought down during the second World War.
The expedition will also try to find the tomb of a US pilot brought down by the Japanese on June 16th 1945 near the Arayse cape on the Paramushir island and examine the bomber /which is believed to be a Lockheed Ventura or a Lockheed Harpoon/ that in 1945 made a crash landing near the Malaya Khodutka hill. The US experts intend to determine the bomber's side number and engine ratings to establish the date and destination of the flight.
The committee will work on the peninsula till June 30th.
This is the third visit to the peninsula by the committee's representatives.
