No "bird flu" cases registered in the Russian Far East

No "bird flu" cases have been registered in the Russian Far East, RIA Novosti was told on Thursday in the Far Eastern zonal directorate for state veterinary supervision at the border of the Russian Federation and at transport.

A tough regime of control was introduced in the airports, seaports, and frontier checkpoints in the Far East. "In cabin" baggage of passengers coming by planes from South East Asia is being checked with special devices. The passengers are banned to bring chicken meat.

As RIA Novosti was told in the veterinary directorate of the Khabarovsk Territory's government, enhanced prophylactic measures have been taken at the poultry farms where more than 700, 000 hens are being kept .

Early this week Russia introduced temporary restrictions on import of poultry meat from Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Taiwan. Restrictions on imports of poultry meat and other poultry foodstuffs from Japan, South Korea and Vietnam were also imposed. Several "bird flu" deaths of people have been registered in these countries.
