Agricultural Lands Sold for Pittance in Kaliningrad Region - 29 August, 2002 - News

According to the Agency for Agriculture and Food of the administration of the Kaliningrad Region, agricultural lands are sold and bought there for a song.

According to the state cadastre, in the region, the price of 1 ha is somewhat under USD 600. However, in many districts, lands are being intensively sold purchased at no more than USD 100 per 1 ha. The count is in thousands of hectares. What is worse, the lands in question remain idle and are grown over by weeds and bushes.

The governor of the Kaliningrad Region has ordered an investigation of the legality of these land purchases by companies that have no connection with agriculture.

On December 10, 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, its thirty articles enshrining basic and fundamental rights guaranteeing dignity of the human person and equality for all, regardless of race, color, creed or gender. A pipe dream?
