Zimbabwe at Crisis Point

The United Nations World Food Programme has warned the international community that the food crisis in Zimbabwe is deteriorating. 6 million people will soon be dependent on Food Aid, most of these living in areas which supported the opposition MDC in the last Presidential election, meaning that the ZANU-PF officials try to restrict the food aid reaching this population.

The UNO reports that there are children leaving school due to malnutrition and that existing stocks of food are falling far short of the targets set. The WFP states that it does not even have enough resources to satisfy the needs of three million people currently at risk, while by the end of the year, the number of people estimated to be dependent on food aid is set at 6.7 million.

Kevin Farrell, spokesperson for the WFP, stated that “it is an extremely serious situation and it is only going to get worse”, adding that unless the government and the international community take serious action fast, there is going to be a humanitarian catastrophe in Zimbabwe in the coming months.
