Monday, May 13, at 20:35 (Kiev time), great football-player and trainer, legend of Soviet football, Valery Lobanovsky died, being 63 years old. Lobanovsky died in clinic hospital N 5, of the city of Zaprozhye, where he was transported May 7, with diagnose disturbance of the brain’s circulation of the blood against the background of hypertensive crisis. May 11, Valery Lobanovsky’s condition worsened, so he was operated because of brain extravasation. Post-operation condition was rather stable. The best specialists on the field of vascular neurosurgery did their best to better the patient’s condition. Though, the illness was more powerful. Valery Lobanovsky was one of the greatest trainers in the history of the USSR and Ukraine. Being Kiev Dinamo team’s player, he won the USSR cup, though he became really famous as a trainer. Dinamo leaded by him 8 times won gold medals of the USSR championship and 6 times the USSR cup, the club was 5 time Ukrainian champion within the period of national independence of Ukraine. The greatest success of Lobanovsky were two Cup Winners’ Cups (1975 and 1986) wan by him, and UEFA Super-Cup (1975). In 1988, the USSR team leaded by Valery Lobanovsky became vice-champion of Europe, while in 1976, the Olympic team leaded by him became bronze prizewinner of the Olympic Games in Montreal. At the recent UEFA congress in Stockholm, where the question about awarding of sport figures was considered, who made a great contribution to development of football on the continent and in the world, Lobanovsky was decided to be awarded with ruby UEFA order.
