Russian scientists start work on developing SARS vaccine

The likelihood of an outbreak of SARS in Russia is very low, according to Gennady Onishchenko, Russia's chief medical officer. Speaking at press conference today, Onishchenko said that the spread of SARS through the world had stabilised. Between June 1 and 16, only 3 new cases were registered in China. Onishchenko stressed that this significantly reduces the risk of the disease spreading to Russia.

Onishchenko told journalists that Russian scientists had managed to isolate the SARS virus from a patient in Blagoveshchensk. 'This was an important scientific achievement that will enable us to develop our own vaccine,' the chief medical officer said. The virus is currently being examined a special diagnostic laboratory near Moscow.
