Most Russians (60%) believe that the army is currently capable of defending the country in case of a real threat of war from another country, according to a survey done by the analytical service of the All-Russia Center for Public Opinion Research. However, one-third (32%) of those polled took the opposite view.
Other findings: 69% believe the army should eventually go on a contract basis, with youths required only to take courses preparing them for reserve duties. Only 23% of those polled believe that conscription ought to be be continued.
The survey was conducted between January 9 and January 13, 2004, and involved 1,584 Russians.
