Russian border guards fired into the air to stop vehicles carrying 27 Chinese who were trying to slip across the border into Ukraine, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported Tuesday.
No one was injured in the incident, the report said, citing a spokesman for the Federal Security Service. The report did not specify when the incident occurred or where along the 1,575-kilometer (975-mile) border.
According to the report, Russian border guards fired nine times into the air after a truck and a car carrying the Chinese ignored the guards' orders to stop.
Russia and Ukraine are prime routes for people from Asia trying to enter Western Europe illegally.
