Police arrest at least 10 anti-government activists in latest demonstration

At least ten protesters were arrested in Moscow during the latest anti-government demonstration which has met strict response of the police, an official said.

Organizers of the Dissenters' March said some 100 people had rallied on a central square in Nizhny Novgorod, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Moscow, and that an unknown number had been detained by riot police, who moved in immediately after protesters began chanting "We'll Take Nizhny Back!"

Nizhny Novgorod regional police chief Alexander Gorbatov said authorities began detained participants after people started lighting flares. He said the protest was unsanctioned.

Other Russia - a group uniting several Russian opposition movements - has organized a series of demonstrations and marches intended to protest against what they say is the growing authoritarianism of President Vladimir Putin's government.

At protests in Moscow and St. Petersburg earlier this month, riot police beat dozens of activists and detained hundreds, prompting strong criticism from human rights groups and some Western governments. Police also harshly quashed an earlier protest in Nizhny Novgorod.
