Ferry Line Connecting Vyborg, Russia, and Kiel, Germany, Closed

The Sovkomflot shipping company closes the ferry line between the town of Vyborg, the Leningrad Region, and the city of Kiel, Germany. According to Sovkomflot's press service, the line will be closed only after all the previous orders have been fulfilled.

The ferry line was opened in the spring of 2001. In December 2002, Sovkomflot opened a ferry line between St. Petersburg and Kiel, the potential here being much higher. Because the two lines were in excess of demand and because ice situation on the Baltic Sea has been complicated, the company made the decision to close the first line. Sovkomflot's German partners agree.

The company's press service says the number of ferries cruising between St. Petersburg and Kiel will be very likely increased. At this time, there are just two ferries.

The 100% government-owned Sovkomflot sipping company is among the largest entities of its kind in Russia. It owns 70 vessels of various types, displaying, between them, 3 million tonns, that is, 30% of the whole sea fleet of Russia.
