Work on the linear section of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline in Belarus (586-768 km) has been completed, according to the public information department of the Belarus unitary enterprise Beltransgaz. The pipeline is now ready to be filled with gas and for balancing and commissioning work to be carried out. The pipeline's working commission has signed an act declaring the section to be complete.
The plans for the construction project were developed by Gazprom subsidiary Giprospetsgaz, the project's main designer, and the Geoservis Institute of the Belarus Ministry of Construction and Architecture, a sub-designer for the project. The construction work was carried out by Stroitransgaz, the project's general contractor, and a number of sub-contractors between May 1997 and December 2002.
The Belarus section of the Yamal-Europe pipeline is 575 km long. The Yamal-Western Europe pipeline system, two sections of which pass through Belarus and Poland to Germany, will allow Russian gas supplies to Europe to double. The total length of the pipeline from the Yamal Peninsula to Germany's eastern border is over 4107 km. 29 compressor stations will be built along the route. The total cost of the project, which will transport over 50 billion cubic metres of gas a year, is planned to be around USD 36 billion.
