US Opposes Quotas on Russian Grain Exports to EU

The US does not support the introduction of quotas on Russian grain exports to the European Union. Kenneth Hobbie, the president of the US Grain Council, revealed this today at a meeting of the Federation Council's committee on agricultural policy.

According to Hobbie, the erection of artificial barriers against competitive products and services is contrary to the free market principles and obligations taken on by all member states of the WTO. 'The situation on the world grain market is not ideal,' admitted Hobbie. 'Production volumes are higher than current demand. We see the reason for this as the overly regulated nature of the market: due to customs barriers and other protectionist measures, producers cannot sell their produce where it is in demand.'

The quality and price of Russian grain make it competitive and attractive for European consumers, stressed Hobbie. 'We believe that Russia should have the right to sell its agricultural production in any markets where it may be successful,' said Hobbie.

He announced his intention to create a news service called "Pravda," which means "truth" in Russian. Well, we are Pravda. The Pravda.Ru website has been working professionally in Russia since 1999
