Canadian Superior Energy Inc. reports that drilling on its Marquis L-35 exploration well offshore Nova Scotia, Canada has commenced.
The well is being drilled approximately one hundred miles offshore Nova Scotia by Rowan Companies, Inc.'s Rowan Gorilla V jack-up drilling rig. The well spudded July 6, 2002. Two Hundred meters of 30-inch surface casing has been set and drilling is currently proceeding ahead. The Gorilla V is the first of a series of Super Gorilla class jack-ups capable of drilling and producing simultaneously in water depths up to 400 feet in harsh environments like offshore Eastern Canada. Six prior wells have been drilled offshore Nova Scotia using the Rowan Gorilla V which features a derrick with a total combined drilling capacity of 3.5 million pounds.
The Marquis L-35 well plan is based on 72 drilling days from spud to a possible total depth of 16,700 feet. A testing program will add an additional 14 days. The primary target for the well is the main Abenaki Carbonate Reef and several prospective uphole zones will also be evaluated by the test well. The first Marquis well will be drilled to a minimum depth of 14,100 feet TVD or, a depth sufficient to test the main deep Abenaki reef section.

The Marquis Project is located approximately 12.5 miles northwest of Sable Island and is directly on trend with, and analogous to, the recent Deep Panuke Abenaki reef natural gas discovery. Deep Panuke is approximately 15.6 miles to the southwest of the Marquis Project and has successfully tested several delineation wells, each with productive capacity in excess of 50 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d). The Deep Panuke discovery production rate is expected to be in excess of 400 mmcf/d when it is brought on line.
