President Putin Urges Sberbank To Work More Actively With Population

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called upon Russia's Sberbank, which is marking its 160th anniversary, to work more actively with the population. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Russian head of state, on Monday, met staff members of one of Sberbank branches. During this meeting Putin said that Sberbank does a good job collecting money from the population, "using also its monopoly position". At the same time, Putin noted, "the Russian people do not yet feel a proper living bond with the country's biggest financial institution". "I understand, of course," the president went on to say, "that there are problems connected with the population's ability to pay". "You, like any banking institution, must be assured that a client taking a credit can return it in the required amount and at the appointed time - this is all understandable," Putin emphasised. "But it is also understandable that working with the population calls for extra effort, special attention and particular professional touch," he added. Putin expressed confidence that Sberbank "has many reserves" for work with the population and expressed hope that this work will get priority. To date household deposits in Sberbank make up 440 billion roubles, and its credit portfolio is 370 billion roubles. Sberbank head Andrei Kazmin, for his part, noted that Putin was the first Russian head of state to visit this financial institution over the 160 years of its existence.
