Another round of negotiations on Russia's entry into the WTO started in Geneva

Another round of negotiations on Russia's entry into the World Trade Organisation /WTO/ has started in Geneva. The Russian delegation at the negotiations is headed by Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade Maxim Medvedkov. The programme for the first day provides for negotiations with Switzerland, Poland, Paraguay, Iceland, Canada and Uruguay. At this round, which will last for a week, negotiations will be conducted altogether with thirty-seven countries, including with China for the first time since it was accepted to the WTO only recently. On Wednesday, at an informal session of the Working Group for Russia's joining the WTO, the first reading of the draft final document of this group will take place. According to a member of the Russian delegation, the draft report "does not contain any unexpected things." However, it has "some complicated moments on which compromises will have to be sought."

On December 10, 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, its thirty articles enshrining basic and fundamental rights guaranteeing dignity of the human person and equality for all, regardless of race, color, creed or gender. A pipe dream?
