The Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Lula) suspended the purchase of fighter aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force, applying the money instead to hunger relief programmes, which he has declared to be a priority for his government, declaring that while there is one single Brazilian hungry, it is a disgrace for the whole of Brazil.
Years of government by Washington-friendly administrations has led to 40 million Brazilians living below the poverty line. President Lula will begin to address this issue when he visits Guaribas, in the south of the state of Piaui in the north-east of Brazil, on 10th January.
Guaribas is a telling example of the effects of decades of corruption, which saw Brazil get inself 230 billion USD in debt. 99% of the population in Guaribas do not have immediate access to drinking water and only 1% have an indoor toilet.
President Lula will supervise the handing-out of magnetic cards which guarantee the holder a monthly purchase of 50 Reais in shopping (15 USD). A basic food basket providing a month’s supply, prepared by nutritionists, costs 31 Reais.
President Lula will also launch a social housing programme in the north-east, in which traditional models of architecture and decoration will be stimulated.
President Lula and his administration have promised to leave Brazil a better place for all Brazilians to live in by the end of their 4-year term in office. The new President has wasted no time in putting his words into action.
