Chemical Armaments Will Not Be Transported around Russia

'Chemical armaments will not be transported around Russia', said Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the Privolzhsk Federal Districts Sergey Kiriyenko, on returning today from Gorny, a small town in the Saratov Region. A meeting of the State Committee for Chemical Disarmament took place in the town.

A Rosbalt correspondent was told by Kiriyenko, who is currently the Chairman of the Committee for Chemical Disarmament, that only reactive matter obtained from the atomisation of lewisite and other poisonous substances can be transported from one place to another. The plenipotentiary said that whereas compound mustard gas can be incinerated, compound lewisite cannot, and must be atomised with the use of different technology. However, the plenipotentiary underlined that the reactive matter is not explosive, and conforms to all requirements for transit by rail.

Kiriyenko went on to say that 'we want to carry out the destruction of chemical armaments using technology which allows the destruction to be done on the spot. But if this turns out to be impossible, then its transportation will in no way harm the environment.'
