SWsoft offers beta version of Parallels Server

A privately held server automation and virtualization software company, SWsoft, reported Wednesday about the release of a beta version of its server virtualization software, Parallels Server.

The server can run Apple’s Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard virtualized on Mac. SWsoft competitor VMware may reel under such a blow.

First introduced in alpha code at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2007 in San Francisco, California , Parallels Server for Mac will reportedly allow IT managers to run multiple server operating systems on a single Mac Xserve.

Parallels Server targets departments of large enterprises and small and medium businesses and it allows x86-based hardware run Windows operating systems and applications. Parallels Server can also run on Linux-based servers.

SWsoft offers 2 ways of server installation:

- with the help of the Parallels hypervisor, when the virtual machines run in tandem with a primary OS

- or with the virtual machines running without depending on a host operating system.
