Paediatric intensive care unit turned out to revive terrific memories in children who had high rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms.
Researchers learned that nearly a third of children who happened to stay in such units suffered from delusions and vivid and frightening hallucinations. In addition they were five times more likely to reveal such symptoms if they were given strong sedatives for more than two days.
The reports included images of rats, cats and scorpions on the walls and in some cases crawling on the bed. A number of children claimed that their parents had been replaced by impostors.
The findings lead to further assessment of the paediatric intensive care system and medication used to treat for serious illness, injuries or help to recover from surgery.
