Cell Reports Journal published an article, in which scientists exposed the results of experiments on artificial evolution of one species of bacteria.
During the experiments conducted on the basis of pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the scientists produced a new species of bacteria that could develop ultra-fast speed.
During mutations, the bacteria acquired two flagella instead of one that allowed them to spread over the surface of the medium at a much higher speed. The change of the phenotype was associated with a mutation in one single gene (FleN) responsible for the quantity of bacterial flagella.
"Ultra-fast" species of Pseudomonas aeruginosa possess lower pathogenicity. They can hardly form the so-called biofilm, which protects microorganisms from the immune system of the host. It is the second flagellum that prevents the mutants from forming the biofilm.
