A meeting of Nobel Prize winners "Science and Progress of Mankind" will be held on June 16 to 21 in St. Petersburg, a RIA Novosti correspondent was told at the organizing committee of this undertaking.

The meeting will be held in the St. Petersburg center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It will be the first meeting in the modern history of scientific awards that will be attended by twenty winners of one of the most prestigious prizes - the Nobel Prize.

The idea of holding such a meeting had been proposed by Zhores Alferov, vice president of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Nobel Prize winner. The meeting was sponsored by the St. Petersburg center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Fund in Support for Education and Research and the Global Energy Foundation. It will be held as part of the scientific program during the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg.

The program envisages public lectures to be delivered by the Nobel Prize winners and round-table discussions of most outstanding problems of modern science.

Taking part in the St. Petersburg meeting will be well-known scientists from Belgium, Britain, China, Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the U.S. Apart from the Nobel Prize winners, leading Russian scientists and experts will also take part in the discussions.
