Discouraging news: stress can cause cancer

A new study showed that stress can lead to the development of cervical cancer in women. The recent study published in the February issue of Annals of Behavioral Medicine, examined 78 women who were diagnosed with cervical dysplasia (precancerous cervical lesions).

The researchers tested the women to see whether there is an immune response to HPV 16, which is one of the strains of human papilloma virus causing the development of cervical cancer. Then, the researchers compared the women’s test results to the level of stress in their lives.

The researchers questioned another group of 28 women whose Pap test results were normal, and the stress level in their lives was not very high.

The researchers compared the results of both groups and stated that the development of cervical cancer in women is linked to stress. The HPV is a sexually transmitted virus, but it disappears in time in case of healthy women.

U. S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention made a statistics, according to which one in four American women between the ages of 14 and 59 years is infected with HPV. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Gardasil, a vaccine administered against the development of HPV strains. Gardasil is the most effective when given to girls before starting their sexual life, but it is not effective in already infected women.
