Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA), an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information technology services, has been granted with about $44.3 million to investigate the influence of laser beam upon the movement of data between microprocessors.

Sun has already started to develop its project on the first installment of $8.1 million together with Stanford and the University of California, San Diego, and two silicon photonics firms, Luxtera and Kotura.
