Sun Microsystems to conduct research on optical chips

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA), an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information technology services, has been granted with about $44.3 million to investigate the influence of laser beam upon the movement of data between microprocessors.

Sun has already started to develop its project on the first installment of $8.1 million together with Stanford and the University of California, San Diego, and two silicon photonics firms, Luxtera and Kotura.

The goal is to find the way to replace the wires used to connect chips with laser beams in a supercomputer.

Sun and its partners will have to solve many problems in the field of silicon photonics to achieve superpace and compactness.
