Finding Refuge in Britain, Russian Oligarchs Face Expulsion to Russia

The London Magistrate's Court has opened a procedure for the extradition of Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky and his associate Yuli Dubov, finding refuge in Britain, to Russia.

The case is conducted by judge Timothy Workman, said the court office. Since last December, Workman has been considering in the same court the procedure of extradition to Russia of Akhmed Zakayev, emissary of Chechen militants.

Today the judge is expected to decide on the expediency of the earlier measures to secure the appearance of the defendants in the court - a bail for their staying free. Also, he will warn them of the prohibition to leave the country, their obligatory presence in court at first notice and fix a date for further hearings of the case.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office is examining the criminal case of Berezovsky and Dubov, accusing them for swindling under aggravated circumstances. They are accused of what they did in November 1994 to July 1995. During that time, Berezovsky was the chairman of the board of directors of the company LogoVAZ, which he established, and Dubov was its general director.

Berezovsky and Dubov have been put on international wanted list and the Russian court has sanctioned their taking into custody. In line with international law, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office in November 2002 appealed to the British Home Office and provided all the documents required for extradition.
