Pamela Anderson wants Putin to save whales

Famous Hollywood actress Pamela Anderson wrote an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The letter was published on the website of SEA Shepherd. Pamela Anderson appealed to the Russian president as an activist who is fighting for the protection of the environment and animal rights, Pravda.Ru reports with reference to RIA Novosti.

The US actress asked Putin to prevent the transportation of meat of rare animal via the Northern Sea Route. To accomplish that, Anderson wrote, Putin should stop the Winter Bay vessel that carries 1,700 tons of fin whale meat from Iceland to Japan.

The ship is registered in Saint Kitts and Nevis and is currently located near the coast of Norway awaiting favorable navigation conditions to travel further in the Arctic Ocean.

Earlier, the ship failed to receive permission to travel through the Suez and Panama canals.

The common fin whale is a close "relative" of the blue whale. The mammal had been almost completely exterminated in the middle of the last century. Fin whale hunting has been prohibited since 1982. In 2006, Iceland unilaterally resumed the commercial hunting of these animals, despite the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
