2 Dead, Over 100 Wounded in Downtown Moscow Soccer Fans' Riots

According to adjusted reports 2 people are dead and over 100 wounded after drunken soccer fan's riot in downtown Moscow yesterday. On Sunday, the body of a young man who had apparently been repeatedly stabbed was found in a vandalized car parked in Tverskaya Street. A wounded police officer died at the Sklifosovsky clinic during this night. However, Rosbalt's reporter could not have this information confirmed by the press service of Moscow's militia force.

The riot resulted in 9 cars burned, over 40 seriously damaged. Nearly 40 store windows were broken, some stores and restaurants looted. A Japanese restaurant in Tverskaya Street was damaged the worst. Destroyed were several trolleybuses, fire trucks, and ambulances.

According to varying reports, between 6,000 and 9,000 fans came to the Manezhnaya Square to watch the Russian-Japanese soccer world championship match on a large TV screen. After the Russian team had been defeated, fights, then rioting began. Some say fights among the drunken pseudo-fans began much earlier. The drunks used baseball bats and iron rods, threw squibs. Then the destruction and looting began. Some buildings, including that of Russia's State Duma, were damaged. Insufficient street militia crews were unable to do anything. The rioters were dispersed not before about 7 p.m.

Several years ago, a prominent Indonesian businessman who now resides in Canada, insisted on meeting me in a back room of one of Jakarta's posh restaurants. An avid reader of mine, he 'had something urgent to tell me', after finding out that our paths were going to be crossing in this destroyed and hopelessly polluted Indonesian capital.
