A federal grand jury indicted an elderly white supremacist Wednesday on charges that could earn him the death penalty in the fatal shooting of a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reports.
In the seven-count indictment, James Von Brunn, 89, of Annapolis, Maryland, is accused of killing officer Tyrone Johns in the June 10 attack.
Four of the seven counts could make him eligible for the death penalty.
He was also charged with gun violations and hate crimes.
Von Brunn, who was shot by return fire from officers at the museum, has been hospitalized since the incident.
A hearing in his case is tentatively scheduled for Thursday afternoon in federal court. The hearing has been postponed several times because of Von Brunn's medical condition, CNN reports.
A resident of Maryland, which borders Washington DC, Von Brunn was an unapologetic racist, who described the United States on his blog as "a Third-World racial garbage-dump - stupid, ignorant, dead broke and terminal."
According to his ex-wife, his hatred of Jews and blacks "ate him alive like a cancer," AFP reports.
