About 40 percent of the people in Hong Kong are overweight or obese, according to a government study released Monday.
About one-fifth of respondents said they have attempted to control their weight, mostly through dieting and exercising, said the study by the Department of Health and the University of Hong Kong.
"About 40 percent of people in Hong Kong could be categorized as overweight or obese," Dr. Tse Lai-yin, a Department of Health consultant, told.
About 15 percent of Hong Kongers smoke cigarettes and almost 10 percent said they are regular alcohol drinkers, the study found.
The study of about 7,000 people over age 15 was conducted between 2003 and 2004, th AP reports.
